2024 / THE VISION
It started in 2024.
We had a vision for a place where finding the right people didn’t mean piecing everything together ourselves.
FLAT’S STORY
Between our work, creative projects and hobbies, we kept running into the same problem: finding the right people.
Here’s how it started01 / SOUND FAMILIAR?
We’re a couple. One of us makes music, the other styles hair, and we both help plan events. We also have careers and plenty of other interests. Some we pursue as hobbies. Others, we’ve also done professionally.
The same search kept coming up across those different parts of our lives. Planning an event made it especially obvious: a photographer, a musician, someone to do hair, someone to help make the whole thing happen.
So we asked around. Checked Instagram. Searched service platforms. Sent messages on WhatsApp. Followed recommendations, then asked a few more questions.
We could find people. It just took a lot of piecing things together.
“Does anyone know a photographer?”
Great work.
Are they available?
“Try a friend of a friend…”
The information was there. It was just scattered.
THE QUESTION GOT BIGGER
We also wanted people to be able to find us through those different sides of our lives. Our skills and interests didn’t fit neatly into one description.
Why should showing another side of yourself mean starting again somewhere else?
We wanted a place with room for all of that.
So we started building FLAT.
02 / SO, WE STARTED BUILDING
2024 / THE VISION
We had a vision for a place where finding the right people didn’t mean piecing everything together ourselves.
THE PAUSE
Building it felt overwhelming, and we got discouraged. We had other things to focus on as a family.
Part of us quietly hoped someone else would solve the problem.
2026 / RETURNING TO IT
As time went on, we kept seeing it around us. It was getting worse, and other people were running into it, too.
With our family more stable and with the help of the LORD, we revisited FLAT in 2026.
FROM THE BUILDING NOTES
THE EARLY IDEA
Early on, we described FLAT as a professional network for creatives. A way to find collaborators, show your work, and get a chance to be seen.
But the more we thought about who could use it, the less sense it made to draw a line around who belonged.
THE FIRST ATTEMPTS
Before all the pages and features, there were early attempts to turn the idea into something you could actually use.
MAKING ROOM
That experience helped shape multiple identities: a way to show a different skill or side of yourself without opening another account. Families made room for the band, team, studio, or group building something together.
GIVING THE FEED AN ENDING
We chose a finite Digest: up to 20 posts from people you’re In Tune with, your mutual connections. Posts last 24 hours. One Retune per rolling 24 hours lets you refresh the selection.
There’s a point where you’re caught up. We wanted that point to exist.
STILL BUILDING
We’ve kept coming back to the details. Clearer words. Readable dark themes. Easier navigation. Sharing a profile that actually takes someone to the right place.
FLAT is still in development. The waitlist is open while we work through the checks needed before opening the platform.
03 / THE CHOICES
Different identities, one account. Show the side of yourself that fits what you’re doing, with room to define your own specialties.
We’re building discovery around relevant skills, availability and location. Paid tools don’t buy organic ranking. Sponsored placements have to be labelled.
A Digest you can finish. A clear signal when there’s something new. Connection that leaves you time to do something with it.
Families give groups a shared place. Open Calls let people say what they need or what they can offer. A connection can become a project, a team, or something we didn’t plan for.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT
We’re keeping our names and faces private because we want FLAT to have an identity of its own. We’d love for that name to remind you of someone you found, a project you started, or a group you brought together.
We’re still responsible for what we build and how we run it. You can reach the FLAT team at admin@flatsocial.app. That’s also where to send a question about this story or your place on the waitlist.
Joining the waitlist asks us to send you a welcome email and a launch invitation. It doesn’t create an account.
How we handle your waitlist details04 / WHAT’S NEXT
Now we’re building for what
we haven’t imagined yet.
Someone will bring a skill we haven’t listed. A group will use FLAT in a way we didn’t expect. An introduction might turn into something neither person could have made alone.
We want to leave room for that. Clear safety rules, prohibited-service policies, and professional licensing requirements still matter.
FLAT began with two people looking for a better way to connect. We have a feeling we’re not the only ones.
